Hiking and Camping Packing List: Trail Essentials That Won't Weigh You Down

Published 4 March 2026 by the Packster team

Every gram matters on the trail. Here's the complete hiking and camping packing list — the ten essentials, the right gear, and how to cut weight without cutting safety.

Hiking and camping packing sits at the intersection of two challenges: you need everything (you're carrying your home and your safety margin), and you need it to be as light as possible (every extra kilogram of pack weight translates directly into effort and fatigue on the trail). Getting this balance right separates a great trip from a miserable one.

The Ten Essentials

The "Ten Essentials" framework — originally published by The Mountaineers in the 1930s and updated since — defines the minimum safety gear for any backcountry trip. These are non-negotiable, regardless of how short the hike or how good the weather forecast.

  • Navigation — paper map of the area and compass (phone GPS fails without signal or battery)
  • Sun protection — SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat
  • Insulation — extra layers for unexpected cold; hypothermia risk is real even in summer
  • Illumination — headlamp with spare batteries
  • First aid — comprehensive first aid kit including blister treatment
  • Fire — waterproof matches or lighter, fire starter
  • Repair tools and knife — multi-tool, duct tape, gear repair patches
  • Nutrition — at least one extra day's food beyond your planned rations
  • Hydration — water filter, purification tablets, enough bottles for the terrain
  • Emergency shelter — emergency bivy or lightweight tarp

Shelter

  • Backpacking tent (or hammock system for wooded areas) — weight is the primary consideration
  • Sleeping bag rated 5–10°C below the lowest expected temperature
  • Sleeping pad — insulation from the ground is as important as the sleeping bag
  • Tent footprint or tarp (protects tent floor)

Tip: Sleeping bag temperature ratings assume you're inside a tent with a sleeping pad. Sleeping directly on the ground or in a hammock without a pad can drop the effective temperature rating by 10–15°C. Always use a pad.

Clothing and Layering

  • Moisture-wicking base layer (top and bottom) — merino wool or synthetic, never cotton
  • Mid-layer fleece or insulated jacket
  • Waterproof/windproof shell jacket (not just water-resistant)
  • Waterproof trousers (packable)
  • Hiking trousers or shorts (2 pairs for multi-day)
  • Trekking socks — wool blend, 3–4 pairs for multi-day trips
  • Lightweight camp shoes (sandals or trail runners) to change into at camp
  • Warm hat and gloves (even in summer for mountain camps)
  • Gaiters for muddy or snowy trails

Footwear: The Most Important Decision

Hiking footwear is the most consequential gear decision. The right choice depends on trail type, pack weight, and your preference for support vs. mobility.

  • Trail runners — the choice for fast-and-light hikers on well-maintained trails; lighter, dry faster, more comfortable for long days
  • Midcut hiking boots — the traditional choice; more ankle support, better for heavy loads and technical terrain
  • Approach shoes — for scrambling and technical trails where grip and precision matter

Kitchen and Water

  • Backpacking stove and fuel canister
  • Lightweight titanium or stainless pot
  • Spork or lightweight utensils
  • Water filter (Sawyer Squeeze or similar) or purification tablets
  • Collapsible water bottles or hydration reservoir
  • Bear canister or hang bag (required in many national parks)
